Lana Shuttleworth
Lana Shuttleworth's predominant medium for the construction and execution of her work is the ubiquitous and ever-present street icon: The Safety Cone. In her quest for materials, we see a contemporary, urban huntress foraging for the food of her creations in a modern-primitive manner that crosses the lines of appropriation and legalities.
The accumulation of her materials that then become fodder for her art and subsequently viewed in the gallery or museum context are a direct transverse of our understanding of street art. While we are accustomed to seeing art made on the streets (ie graffiti/stencils/paste ups/murals) making their way into gallery and museum exhibitions, there is also a history of discarded materials and found objects being used as well, the safety cone being Lana's.
Once the safety cones are acquired, they are compulsively and painstakingly cut into tiny little pieces or carved almost beyond recognition. Locked by their inherent inability to biodegrade, they are immortalized as animals, elaborate landscapes, skeletons and portraits. Of note is the conceptual transformation of a man-made thing into the form of a natural thing, marking mans contemporary struggle with nature.
The safety cone itself is no longer the meager notion of "I exist therefore I am". But rather, more importantly is what it is saying when it has become something else.
