Sam GezariSam's humble approach to his art is commendable. His thoughts are concise yet riddled with tremendous stories of people & their places, the things they do, where they go & how they define themselves. His recent series of work evolves around the premise of travel documentation. On a national road trip, Sam photographed detailed images of patterns within architecture, images of vehicles on the road with him, novelty items that point out irony & people doing things that relate to their journeys – strangers whom we will not know what they are thinking or where they were going, but we can formulate prose & imaginary circumstances & find commonality. Sam's "eye" is poetic, sensitive, detailed and painterly. His use of the camera is so skilled that his images appear as palettes of color that tease us into thinking we are looking at a canvas. Upon knowing that they are photos instead of paintings, we can only be that more excited about Sam's vision & expertise. Sam’s new series “References” statement excerpts: Although the early American ideology of westward expansion has faded away, it has left its indelible mark on our collective consciousness and influenced our cultural identity. The images in this project are evidence that the newness and excitement of the frontier still lingers on. It is found in the small, dusty corners of roadside markets or the hollow street corners of border towns at dawn or in the white Trans Am racing alone against a thunderous sky. These places are found anywhere and everywhere. They are as much a state of mind as they are dependent upon the impossibility of a warm, smoky wind pushing scattered papers into an empty intersection. The resulting photographs convey the chance convergence of light, and gesture, and transition and try to tell a much larger story. Sam Gezari was recognized for his work in the “Enter / Exit” exhibit, August 2005.
