Matt Burlingame
Matt Burlingame depicts unwholesome scenes. Yet somehow they make us laugh. Is that wrong? Burlingame makes miniatures completely fabricated by hand, using little or no found objects, except for the occasional rusty razor blade or little mouse skull under panes of glass. Each sculpture or diorama is painstakingly thought out and fabricated to the utmost detail and using only the most compulsive tactics. His themes evolve around some of our deepest fears, our favorite ways to love/hate something and most recently bodies with component and interchangeable parts. In his representation of Mr.-Potato-head-type "robot guys" (he doesn't portray women) we are left feeling like we actually wish we could be that guy - to take masks on and off, change out wigs of hair, or perhaps try a different nose. Alas, we are only human and must ultimately accept ourselves for the way we are…especially since we have to be so well-behaved all the time.
