danielle b. ashtonThe work of danielle b. ashton is meticulous, yet not complicated by over-decoration or conceptual mass-explanation. danielle b. ashton’s new work is a series of tiny photo-mounted panels that incorporate sculpture. This work evolves around the notion of conscious movement and the encouragement for people to be aware of all aspects of life, the day-to-day routines that are sometimes perceived as small, but as a whole are quite monumental. These concepts are solidified by the use of found objects & every-day things, such as cat hair, a sock with holes, glue – all made into “Seasonal Cocoons” that represent the larger story of hibernation. The intrinsic intimacy of her work in scale & execution mark time with delicacy & reflection. Her work is featured in our show “Small is Large”. Her “daniellians”, exhibited in the show “Regeneration”, utilizes carved porcelain sculpture in black & white organic shapes, arranged in vignettes & groupings. The shapes are engaged in relationships with each other, interacting & telling stories with the piece they are displayed against. The pieces evolve out of ashton’s whimsical & delicate imagination – that of travel, tribulation & ultimately settling to find commonality. Each time they are assembled a new idea is formed, taking on strangely human characteristics to emphasize the human condition of communities. Recently she has been invited by LACMA for a studio visit for their annual emerging artist acquisitions for 2006. She currently is an assistant to the artist Kim Abeles.
